Ground Rules
- Dips are NOT condiments (although there are some grey areas as we discovered in this episode). Either way we already did that episode on condiments
- Even though we just said that the technical definition is: A dip or dip sauce is a common condiment for many types of food. Dips are used to add flavor or texture to a food. But we are trying to avoid things like ketchup, mayo, mustard to count as a dip
- We used the Alton Brown definition which is defined based on its ability to “maintain contact with its transport mechanism over three feet [1 m] of white carpet“.
- A dip is NOT a sauce nor is it a spread (ie butter)
- What vessel or vehicle we choose to dip with doesn’t really affect our choice for dip as that’s personal preference. We should be able to decide if we like the dip based on the finger test.
- Some dips are popular but there are often cases where you can get a bad version of that dip (ie guac). We will take that into consideration but also ultimately we are ranking the best ideal version of these dips against each other.
- Some dips will encapsulate the entire category for that dip nomination (ie Hummus will include all kinds of hummus since there are so many varieties)
