82 – Top 5 80’s Songs

March 26, 2020

Comb back your mullets and perms because this week we are going back to the 80’s!

In many ways, the 80’s were a much simpler time. A time where fashion was colorfully neon and bold,  where people loved to actually go out to the movies and go dancing, and a time where random slang words were ‘gnarly’ and ‘hella’ plentiful.  Music was particularly ‘bitchin’ during this time because it gave rise to some of the best karaoke songs and, not to mention, music videos that has ever existed.  From whiny guitars to synth drums to dancing in a skin-tight outfit while dramatically belting out lyrics that put today’s songs to shame – 80’s music had it it all. This week join Tuong La and Tubular guests Victoria Luloff, Axandre Lemours,  and Colleen Wang as they ‘totally’ come up with a ‘rad’ Top 5 80’s Songs List!

Ground Rules

  • Music has to have been released in the 80’s (Duh!)
  • Songs that were released in the 70’s and popularized in the 80’s don’t count
  • Music can be from any genre in the 80’s
  • We are more or less taking some inspiration for our ground rules from this Urban Dictionary definition:
  • “80’s music consisted mostly of whiny guitars, semi-human(as in: never too masculine) voices and better lyrics in general than most/all of the hip-hop/pop songs that you will find on the radio today. Chances are, if the music sounds like a cross between innocently thundering guitars and lukewarm/strong drugs, it’s 80’s music. If there’s a music video involving a singer with a spectacular vocal range and hair combed halfway up to the ceiling dancing on a stage with horrid patterns on his skin-tight outfit, it’s 80’s music. If you’re too young understand the political references in the lyrics or just old enough to remember what they were about, it’s 80’s music. If a man wearing an ‘I love the 80’s!’ t-shirt suddenly looks up at the supermarket and names a Duran Duran song to the nearest person, it’s 80’s music. If you go to amazon or e-bay and type ’80’s music’ into the search field, it’s 80’s music. No, really, it’s true.”

We compiled a totally bodacious 80’s playlist of all the songs that we nominated and our honourable mentions for your listening pleasure! Check it out and enjoy!
